What is Ozempic?

Ozempic is a prescription medication used primarily to treat type 2 diabetes in adults. Ozempic contains the active ingredient semaglutide, which belongs to a class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. It is typically given once weekly as an injection.

How It Works

GLP-1 Receptor agonists work by:

  • Increasing insulin production after meals
  • Slowing down food movement through the stomach
  • Reducing the amount of sugar released into the bloodstream

Main Uses

Ozempic helps manage blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and exercise. Lowers the risk of major cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke in adults who have both type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

FDA Approved Weight Loss Medications

Similar to Ozempic, but specifically approved for weightloss are options like Wegovy, Tirzepatide.

Effectiveness

Semaglutide (Wegovy) has shown an average weight loss of about 15% of body weight. Tirzepatide (Zepbound) has demonstrated even higher efficacy, with an average weight loss of about 21% in clinical trials.
